What are Silly Pugs?

Samson and Jasper were the original Silly Pugs. They were actually German Shepherd Dogs. Each one weighed over 100 lbs, they were hulking, strapping boys. But I endearingly referred to them as my "silly pugs" because in my eyes, they always remained the vulnerable little puppies that scampered into my arms and my heart at first sight.

Samson

Known as The Gentle Giant for his willingness to put up with our goofy hijinx, Samson often greets us in the morning with soft sniffs and extremely gentle licks. Among Sammy's likes are licking (everything), taking me for walks, and devising sneaky attempts to steal Jasper's toys.

Samson passed away on December 10, 2004 from hemangiosarcoma, cancer of the blood vessels. He crossed the bridge quietly, at home from his bed, surrounded by love. He is missed more than words can express.

Jasper

Jasper was the Biggest Toy Hoarder in the World. He was rarely ever without at least 1 toy, even while he slept. Jassy was diagnosed with epilepsy and hypothyroidism at the age of 2. Later in life, he was also diagnosed with degenerative myelopathy, and finally lymphoma for which he underwent chemo.

Despite these diseases, Jasper lived life with zeal and fervor. He was a dog with an abundance of enthusiasm, whether it be towards his food, his toys, or his desire to lick your face spotless.

Jasper died on May 31, 2004. We held him and petted him and whispered sweet nothings into his ear as he joined Sammy at the Rainbow Bridge.

Boomer & Phoebe

We now have a new generation of Silly Pugs with us. Boomer is a boxer mix, rescued in his last hours from a local shelter. He was our first foster dog who we ended up adopting. Phoebe, a pittie, was raised in foster care for the first 8 months of her life. She was among the last of her litter to be find a permanent home--with us. Together, Boomer & Phoebe continue the legacy of laughter and joy that Jassy & Sammy created.

What do "Silly Pugs" have to do with Grinders?

Well, to us, everything. We don't view our website so much as a grinder store as we do a celebration of and testament to our love for dogs. Our personal lives are very much intertwined with a commitment to the well-being of each and every dog that comes into our care. And this commitment extends to what and how we feed them.

Jassy & Sammy were fed kibble for the first 5 years of their lives. After much research, we gradually switched them to fresh, raw foods. Yes, it does take more planning, more time and effort but when we saw first-hand the long-term benefits of a feeding a natural diet and the amazing improvement in their health, we could not in good conscious go back to kibble simply for the sake of convenience.

Dogs do derive benefit from chewing on whole raw (never cooked!) bones but our dogs were gulpers so choking was always a concern. That was when we started looking into meat grinders. There were hardly any grinders being marketed for soft bones so it was a difficult and often confusing process knowing which one to get. We made a few bad decisions and wasted hundreds of dollars in a very short period.

Knowing that there were many others who would find themselves in the same shoes, we created Sillypugs.com and quietly introduced the idea of grinders made for grinding bones. You will discover that many businesses that sell grinders today have added notes about grinding bones to their product descriptions. Much of this was taken from our own findings. We are still one of the very few (and we mean very few) who actually test and use these grinders regularly specifically for this purpose. We do indeed practice what we preach.
